Adventure: Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

Whisler Wildlands visited Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Maryland this week. The Refuge was established in 1933 for waterfowl as a sanctuary for the birds migrating along the critical migration route called the Atlantic Flyway. It was a beautiful day for observing wildlife, especially many different bird species. Redheaded Woodpeckers, Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Great Blue Herons, Flycatchers, and many others were observed. If you enjoy trails, wildlife drives, birding or wildlife viewing, and are in the Chesapeake Bay area I highly recommend a visit to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. I managed to capture an image of a Red-headed Woodpecker, Melanerpes erythrocephalus, during our adventures there. Their population has been observed as declining and are considered to be in a near threatened status. If you would like to learn more about the Red-headed Woodpecker you can find more information here.
